A warm, breezy stretch settles over Kiowa County through the weekend, with sunny skies and a high near 88 in the Eads area Friday climbing to about 95 Saturday before afternoon thunderstorm chances and slightly cooler air arrive Sunday and into next week.

Friday brings sunshine and breezy south-southeast winds of 15 to 20 mph. A stray thunderstorm is possible Friday evening, with no more than a 10 percent chance before 11 p.m. and a low around 60 under partly cloudy skies.

"High fire danger continues to ramp up across the area this weekend and into next week," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion, pointing to a warming and drying trend across southeast Colorado.

Heat and fire danger build

After a one-day lull in fire-weather concerns Friday, breezy west-to-southwest winds and dry air return Saturday, and forecasters expect critical fire conditions to develop over the higher terrain to the west. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect Saturday for the mountains, high valleys and adjacent plains zones west of Kiowa County; the Eads area is not included in the watch, but the broader warming and drying trend warrants caution with anything that could spark a fire.

Saturday also brings a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms as a dryline sets up over the eastern plains. The Pueblo office noted that storms developing along that boundary could push east, with a few briefly strengthening to produce gusty winds and small hail closer to Prowers and Baca counties.

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday is the warmest day of the period, sunny with a high near 95 and breezy south winds increasing to 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. A 10 percent chance of storms after noon rises to 20 percent Saturday night as the low settles near 59.

Sunday stays sunny with a high near 91 and a 30 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms as winds turn out of the north. Overnight lows dip into the mid 50s.

Extended outlook

Storm chances continue into early next week as daily afternoon thunderstorms become possible across the plains. Monday and Tuesday turn a little cooler, with highs near 82 and a 20 to 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms each day, mainly in the afternoon and evening.

Residents should use caution with outdoor burning as fire danger increases this weekend and stay alert for gusty winds and brief storms in the afternoons.
