Sunny, warm weather is forecast for Eads and Kiowa County on Wednesday, followed by a windy Friday with gusts as high as 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo. A cold front and a chance of showers arrive Saturday.

Wednesday brings sunshine and a high near 76 degrees. Winds will be northwest at 5 to 10 mph, turning east-southeast in the afternoon. Wednesday night is expected to be partly cloudy with a low around 51.

Thursday should be mostly sunny with a high near 80 and a south wind of 5 to 15 mph. Friday is the day to watch: the forecast calls for a mostly sunny sky, a high near 79 and a south wind of 25 to 30 mph with gusts as high as 50 mph.

Warm and dry before the weekend change

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion that conditions across the plains should stay generally warm and dry through the work week, with cooler and more unsettled weather for the weekend into early next week.

The forecaster said a ridge of high pressure will build over eastern Colorado through Thursday while a Pacific storm system moves through the Great Basin. The heaviest rain from that system is expected in the mountains of southwestern Colorado, where a Flood Watch is in effect Wednesday afternoon through Friday for zones that do not include Kiowa County.

No Red Flag Warning or other weather hazards are listed for Eads as of Tuesday afternoon, though the forecast for Thursday night and Friday includes breezy to windy conditions.

Thursday and Friday

Thursday remains warm, with highs near 80 under mostly sunny skies. Thursday night turns breezy, with south winds of 20 to 25 mph and gusts as high as 35 mph, and clouds increasing. The overnight low is forecast near 55, well above normal for late October.

Friday's south winds of 25 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph, could make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles and loosen unsecured outdoor items. Winds stay strong through Friday night, with gusts as high as 45 mph and a low near 52.

Weekend outlook

A front is expected to move across the plains Saturday, dropping the high to near 63 with a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms that favor the afternoon. Saturday night brings a 70 percent chance of showers and a low near 42.

Sunday is cooler still, with a high near 56, a 50 percent chance of showers and a southeast wind around 15 mph. Sunday night's low is near 40. Forecasters noted that model guidance has shown run-to-run differences, so details could change.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose objects and use extra caution with outdoor burning ahead of Friday's strong winds. Updated forecasts are available from the National Weather Service in Pueblo at weather.gov/pub.
