Cheyenne County nears 100 to start the week before a midweek front brings storm chances

While no heat advisory covers Cheyenne County, forecasters expect heat indices of roughly 100 to 105 degrees across the region Monday, and a Heat Advisory is in effect for portions of northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska.
"Convective coverage peaks on Wednesday and Thursday evenings as the surface front interacts with a moist, moderately unstable airmass," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion.
Tuesday front opens the door to midweek storms
A cold front is expected to push through the area Tuesday morning with an abrupt shift to east and northeast winds, followed by a period of breezy conditions with gusts to 30 mph. The front sets the stage for the week's best rain chances: 50 percent Wednesday night and 60 percent Thursday night, when showers are likely before midnight.
Forecasters note that slow-moving storms in a moist air mass could produce localized heavy rainfall, while any collapsing storms late in the week could generate gusty outflow winds.
