Cheyenne Wells approaches 100 Saturday as heat builds in Cheyenne County
Cheyenne Wells warms to a high near 93 under sunny skies Friday, with temperatures climbing to about 99 Saturday and 96 Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan.
Friday is sunny in Cheyenne County with a high near 93 and a south wind of 10 to 15 mph. Skies become mostly cloudy Friday evening before gradually clearing, with an overnight low around 65 and a continued south wind of 10 to 15 mph.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion that a severe storm “cannot be ruled out late this afternoon and evening,” mainly near the Colorado-Kansas-Nebraska border between roughly 6 and 11 p.m., with localized wind gusts up to 65 mph the main threat. They described the severe potential as lower than on previous days and said confidence in storm coverage and eastern extent was low.
Slight storm chance Friday evening, then a hot weekend
Closer to Cheyenne Wells, the Goodland office put the chance of showers or an isolated thunderstorm Friday evening at less than 20 percent and said severe storms are not anticipated. Storms forming over the mountains and Front Range during the afternoon are expected to have difficulty holding together as they move east.
Temperatures run well above normal through the weekend. Forecasters expect afternoon relative humidity to fall below 20 percent at times, but with light winds they wrote that no fire weather concerns are anticipated. No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for the Colorado portion of the Goodland forecast area as of Friday morning.
The best rain chances of the period arrive later. The forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday night and a 50 percent chance Monday night.

Tuesday is mostly sunny with a high near 90. Forecasters expect near-daily storm chances of at least 15 percent to continue into next week, with temperatures warming again by Wednesday and Thursday.
With highs near 100 Saturday and Sunday, residents should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, drink water regularly and check on older neighbors and others vulnerable to heat.
