Cheyenne Wells faces a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday evening before warmer, mostly dry weather settles over Cheyenne County, with highs rising from the low 80s Wednesday to near 90 by the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan.

Wednesday brings mostly cloudy and breezy skies with a high near 83 and a south wind of 15 to 20 mph gusting to 30 mph. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms develops in the evening, mainly between 7 and 11 p.m., before skies turn mostly cloudy overnight with a low around 53. The chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Forecasters are carrying a limited severe-weather threat early in the period. There is a “marginal risk for severe storms… for today and Thursday,” a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Wednesday’s Area Forecast Discussion, noting that wind and blowing dust would likely be the primary hazards given weak wind shear over eastern Colorado.

Warmer and drier into the weekend

After Wednesday, the Weather Service expects an “increasing signal for above normal temperatures this weekend into early next week with highs in the upper 80s to mid 90s possible.” Storm chances taper off, leaving mostly sunny skies Friday through Sunday. No fire-weather watches or warnings are in effect for Cheyenne County, and high humidity is keeping fire danger low.
