Fog gives way to a mostly cloudy Friday in Kiowa County, with a high near 63, and mild, cloudy weather is forecast to hold through the weekend before a strong cold front brings rain and powerful north winds Monday, the National Weather Service in Pueblo said.

A Dense Fog Advisory for the Eads area remains in effect until 10 a.m. Friday, with areas of dense fog expected before 11 a.m. Skies are then mostly cloudy, with south-southeast winds of 5 to 10 mph increasing to 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Friday night is mostly cloudy with a low around 46 and southeast winds of 5 to 15 mph.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Friday’s Area Forecast Discussion that a strong cold front will reach the Plains on Monday, bringing winds “in excess of 40 mph” that could continue into Tuesday. Forecasters also noted that fog returning to the eastern plains overnight could reduce visibility to 1 to 3 miles, with locally denser areas.

Monday front brings rain and gusts to 65 mph

The Eads forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon Monday, with a high near 59. Winds are forecast to start out of the west-southwest at 15 to 25 mph before turning north at 35 to 45 mph, with gusts as high as 65 mph. Monday night remains very windy, with a 30 percent chance of showers before midnight, a low near 38 and north-northwest winds of 35 to 40 mph gusting to 60 mph.

The Pueblo office’s heavier rain and flooding concerns are focused on the San Juan Mountains and San Luis Valley, where a Flood Watch is in place from late Saturday night through Monday morning. No Red Flag Warning or Fire Weather Watch was listed for Kiowa County, and the recent fog and low clouds have kept conditions moist.
