A hot, dry and breezy stretch is ahead for Prowers County, with sunny skies in Lamar and highs climbing from the low 90s Wednesday to near 100 by Sunday.

Wednesday will be sunny and breezy in Lamar, with a high near 93. A southeast wind of 10 to 15 mph will increase to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, with gusts to 30 mph. Wednesday night will be mostly clear and breezy, with a low around 64 and southeast winds of 15 to 20 mph gusting as high as 35 mph.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo, which issues forecasts for Prowers County, had no watches, warnings or advisories in effect Tuesday afternoon, and no fire weather warnings covered the Lamar area. Even so, the combination of mid- to upper-90s heat and winds gusting 30 to 35 mph through Friday can elevate fire danger in dry grasses across the lower Arkansas Valley, and residents should use caution with outdoor burning and spark-producing equipment.

Triple-digit heat possible Sunday

Highs in Lamar rise steadily through the week — 94 Thursday, 96 Friday and 98 Saturday — before Sunday turns sunny and hot with a high near 100. The breezy southeast winds that accompany the first half of the stretch ease over the weekend as a ridge of high pressure builds over the Rockies. The heat is expected to persist into early next week, with Monday forecast near 101 before slightly cooler air arrives.
