Cheyenne Wells and Cheyenne County are in for a hot and breezy week, with sunny skies, afternoon highs in the mid-90s and gusty southwest winds expected Monday through Wednesday. The National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., calls for above-normal temperatures to continue through the work week, with isolated storm chances building later in the week.

Monday will be sunny and breezy, with a high near 96 and southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph gusting as high as 35 mph. Skies stay clear Monday night as the low falls to around 60 and winds shift to the northwest after midnight.

"Hot, dry and breezy through the beginning of the work week," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion. Forecasters said isolated storm chances arrive Monday in eastern areas, with more scattered storms possible across the entire area Tuesday and Wednesday, though severe chances remain low.

Storm chances and fire weather

No Red Flag Warning is in effect for Cheyenne County, and the Goodland office reports no active fire weather warnings for Colorado. Forecasters are watching for the possibility of critical fire weather later in the week, however, noting that northwest Cheyenne County and southwest Kit Carson County could see elevated wind and very low humidity Thursday. Recent rainfall may help keep conditions in check, but a Red Flag Warning could be needed if vegetation dries out.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday will be sunny with a high near 95, as north winds give way to south winds of 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon and gusts as high as 35 mph. Tuesday night turns breezy, with a low around 62 and south gusts near 40 mph. Wednesday brings more sunshine and a high near 95, with scattered afternoon thunderstorms possible across the area, mainly drifting in from southeast Colorado and southwest Kansas.

Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday

The heat builds through the end of the week. Thursday will be sunny and hot with a high near 98, followed by a Friday high near 101. Breezy conditions continue, particularly overnight. Goodland forecasters expect hot, dry conditions to persist across east-central Colorado, with afternoon humidity dropping into the teens and wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph possible — a combination that will keep fire danger in the conversation through Friday.

With temperatures climbing into the upper 90s and beyond, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon and take precautions against the heat.
