Lamar faces the hottest day of the week Monday with a high near 99 and south-southwest winds gusting to 45 mph, then drops roughly 23 degrees Tuesday as a strong cold front pushes south through Prowers County. Wednesday recovers to near 87 as a monsoonal moisture surge brings daily rain chances through the end of the week.
Monday will be mostly sunny in Lamar with a high near 99, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo. Breezy south-southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will gust as high as 45 mph, and a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after 2 p.m. Rainfall should total less than a tenth of an inch outside of storms. Monday night carries a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight and a low around 61, with winds turning north after midnight behind the front.
"Downslope flow should boost max temps a bit, and went with temps on the higher side of the blended guidance envelope, especially on the plains," Eric Petersen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo, wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion.
Heat and wind Monday, then a sharp cooldown
Monday's combination of near-record-range heat and gusty winds warrants care with outdoor burning and equipment that throws sparks, even though no fire weather watches or warnings were in effect for Prowers County or the wider Pueblo forecast area as of Sunday night. The Pueblo office listed no watches, warnings or advisories in its Sunday evening discussion.
Forecasters said a northern Rockies wave will push a strong cold front south through the region Monday night, with the boundary near the New Mexico border by Tuesday morning. High temperatures Tuesday are expected to run 15 to 20 degrees cooler than Monday at many plains locations. A monsoonal tap of moisture then develops Wednesday through Saturday, with widespread showers and thunderstorms each day and an increasing heavy rainfall threat.

Rain chances climb Tuesday night, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms giving way to showers likely after midnight. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent and the low will be around 55.
Wednesday warms back to a high near 87 under partly sunny skies, with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon and south-southeast winds of 5 to 15 mph gusting to 30 mph. Pueblo forecasters expect temperatures to climb a few degrees Wednesday through Friday before a potential cold front drops readings below average for the weekend. Heavy rainfall remains the main concern with the daily storms, especially over area burn scars.
With a high near 99 and gusts to 45 mph Monday, residents should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, drink water regularly and secure loose items around yards and job sites. Storm chances returning midweek may bring brief heavy rain and rapid changes in road conditions.
