Near 94 in Eads Monday before cold front drops Kiowa County into the 70s Tuesday
Kiowa County closes out its summer heat Monday with a high near 94 in Eads and southwest winds gusting to 40 mph, then loses more than 20 degrees overnight as a strong cold front sweeps south across the plains. Tuesday tops out near 73 under windy, partly sunny skies, and Wednesday recovers to about 84 as a wetter pattern takes hold.
Monday will be mostly sunny in Eads with a high near 94, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo. Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will gust as high as 40 mph, and there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Rainfall amounts should stay under a tenth of an inch outside of thunderstorms. Monday night brings a 30 percent chance of showers and storms before 8 p.m. and a low around 58, with east-southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph turning north at 20 to 25 mph after midnight as the front arrives.
"Lee surface trough on the plains may end up forcing a few storms as well, especially along and east of a Trinidad/Las Animas/Eads line," Eric Petersen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo, wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion. "Downslope flow should boost max temps a bit, and went with temps on the higher side of the blended guidance envelope, especially on the plains."
Cold front resets the week
The Pueblo forecast office identified the Monday night frontal passage as the week's defining event, with the boundary expected to reach the New Mexico border by Tuesday morning. Forecasters wrote that the much cooler air mass will cover the plains during the day Tuesday, with high temperatures 15 to 20 degrees cooler than Monday at many locations.
Behind the front, a monsoonal surge of moisture is expected to develop Wednesday through Saturday, with widespread showers and thunderstorms each day and an increasing heavy rainfall threat, particularly over area burn scars. No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for the Pueblo forecast area as of Sunday night, and no fire weather headlines covered Kiowa County.

Tuesday will be partly sunny and windy in Eads with a high near 73 — the coolest day of the week. North-northeast winds of 25 to 30 mph will ease to east-northeast at 15 to 20 mph by afternoon. Rain chances build Tuesday night, with a slight chance of showers before 9 p.m., a slight chance of thunderstorms between 9 p.m. and midnight, and a chance of showers after midnight. The overall chance of precipitation is 40 percent and the low will be around 52.
Wednesday turns warmer, with a high near 84, partly sunny skies and a 10 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. South-southeast winds will run 5 to 15 mph. The bigger story arrives Wednesday night: showers are likely with a possible thunderstorm before midnight, then a continued chance of showers, with a 60 percent chance of precipitation and a low around 59.

Pueblo forecasters expect temperatures to drift upward a few degrees Wednesday through Friday before a potential cold front pushes readings back below average over the weekend. Daily rain chances are forecast to continue through the period.
