A cool, wet and breezy start to the week gives way to strong north winds Thursday and the first freezing temperatures of the season by Friday night in Kiowa County, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

Wednesday brings cloudy skies, a high near 55 and a 70 percent chance of showers, mainly after 5 p.m. Winds blow from the east-northeast at 15 to 20 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph. Rainfall totals are expected to stay under a tenth of an inch during the day.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion that a moist, easterly flow behind a passing front will bring widespread low clouds across the plains early Wednesday, with showers spreading across the region through the day and "a stronger storm or two" possible Wednesday night.

Rain, a possible thunderstorm, then a windy Thursday

Wednesday night remains unsettled, with showers and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, followed by a chance of showers. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent, with new amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, though higher totals are possible under any thunderstorm. The low is around 40. Winds from the north at 10 to 15 mph shift to the north-northwest at 15 to 20 mph after midnight, gusting to 30 mph.

Thursday turns windy. The forecast calls for partly sunny skies and a high near 56, with north winds of 20 to 25 mph increasing to 30 to 35 mph in the afternoon. Gusts could reach 50 mph. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should expect difficult conditions on north-south roads.
