Sunny Friday for Cheyenne County as dryline sets up nearby; rain arrives Monday night
Cheyenne Wells starts the weekend sunny and warm, with Friday reaching near 89 degrees and Sunday climbing to about 93, while a dryline setting up near town Friday afternoon keeps any storm threat east of the Colorado line. A cold front Monday afternoon ends the warm stretch, bringing likely showers Monday night and a high of only about 69 on Tuesday.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., placed a southwest-to-northeast oriented dryline across the area Friday afternoon, running roughly along a line from Cheyenne Wells to Goodland and McCook, Neb. East of that line, surface dewpoints in the lower 60s and unbroken sunshine were expected to build moderate instability. A meteorologist with the office wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion that the combination of that instability and deep-layer wind shear was "supportive of severe weather, should deep/sustained updrafts develop."
Storm threat stays east of Cheyenne County
The office said any isolated severe storm Friday evening was most likely over northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska, mainly north and east of Colby, Kan., with quarter-size hail and wind gusts up to 65 mph the primary threats if storms form. Forecast model guidance disagreed on whether storms would develop at all. No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for the Colorado portion of the Goodland forecast area Friday morning, and no convection was anticipated locally Saturday or Saturday night.

Monday stays warm and mostly sunny with a high near 89 ahead of a cold front that forecasters said had an 80 percent chance of moving through during the afternoon. Showers become likely Monday night with a thunderstorm possible, a 70 percent chance of precipitation and a low around 54. Tuesday turns mostly cloudy and much cooler, with a high near 69 and a 20 percent chance of showers; confidence that showers linger into Tuesday was rated at about 50 percent. Tuesday night carries a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms with a low around 50.
Residents with outdoor plans Friday evening should keep an eye on the sky and on radar. Storms are not expected in Cheyenne County, but any that do develop near the dryline could produce hail and strong wind gusts with little warning.
