Vic Meyers, a longtime Trinidad resident, U.S. Army veteran, and former Colorado Department of Corrections officer, has secured the Democratic Party nomination for Colorado House District 47 and will advance to the November 2026 general election.
Meyers announced the nomination after facing no competition at the county assembly and receiving no challengers through the petition process.
A lifelong resident of Southern Colorado, Meyers was born and raised in Pueblo County and has lived in Trinidad for the past 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division, working as a flight engineer on a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. Meyers began his college education in August 1990 before being recalled to active duty for Operation Desert Storm. He later earned a bachelor of science in mathematics at Colorado State University Pueblo.
Meyers has been married to his wife, Kelly, for 32 years. The couple has three children and six grandchildren. He served on the Trinidad School Board from 2007 to 2011.
His career has centered on public service. After the military, Meyers spent 17 years with the Colorado Department of Corrections, then became a middle school math teacher before serving as coordinator for the Communities That Care program in Huerfano County. He currently works for a security contractor in a federal building.
If elected, Meyers said his primary goal is to make Colorado strong enough to remain independent and able to withstand federal overreach. He plans to work toward limiting the use of license plate readers and facial recognition technology, arguing that artificial intelligence should not be weaponized in ways that infringe on residents' right to live free of government surveillance.
Meyers also said strengthening public school funding, protecting rural health care, and bolstering family-based agriculture are essential to keeping Colorado strong and independent.
“Growing up in rural Colorado, I always heard about the federal government intruding on states,” Meyers said. “In 2026, it’s not only becoming true; but the very party that always preached it are the ones doing the overreaching. It’s time for FDR Democrats like me to stand up and do our part.”
Colorado House District 47 covers portions of southern Colorado. The general election will be held Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
