Lamar area braces for heavy rain, flood threat before dry weekend
Heavy rain is forecast across Prowers County on Wednesday, with a Flood Watch in effect through noon Thursday, before conditions dry out and warm into the 70s by the weekend.
Wednesday brings showers and possibly a thunderstorm, with a high near 71. Breezy east-northeast winds of 15 to 20 mph are expected, with gusts up to 35 mph. The National Weather Service puts the chance of precipitation at 90 percent, with three-quarters of an inch to an inch of rain possible.
Showers remain likely Wednesday night with a low near 54. Thursday brings showers mainly before noon, a high near 66 and north winds of 20 to 25 mph gusting to 40 mph. Friday is mostly sunny with a high near 68.
Flood Watch in effect
A forecaster with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion that the system will bring "periods of heavy rain, the potential for flash flooding, strong northerly winds, and high mountain snow across southern Colorado." Precipitation totals across the rest of the forecast area are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, and flash flooding remains a concern where soils are already saturated.
Rain is expected to end through Thursday afternoon. No Red Flag Warning is in effect for Prowers County.
