Largest Earthquake in Colorado this Year Strikes Las Animas County Saturday

Las Animas was the site of another earthquake Saturday evening according to the United States Geological Survey.

The 4.0 quake, as measured on the Richter Scale, occurred at about 4:45 p.m. as was centered about 68 miles south of Pueblo at a depth of three miles. The earthquake was downgraded slightly from the original 4.1 report.

An hour after the earthquake occurred, 30 people had reporting feeling the shaking, however damages and injuries had not been reported.

The quake was 20 miles north of a 3.0 earthquake that occurred Wednesday morning, and about two miles east of a 3.4 quake that shook the area December 20.

Since January 1, 10 earthquakes measuring 2.0 or greater than have occurred in western Las Animas county, with an additional 3.1 quake occurring just over the Colorado-New Mexico border. Across Colorado, 37 earthquakes have shaken the state, with most occurring in western Colorado. Nine have been recorded since the start of December, including one near Rangely, and four in Dolores County.

December 10, a 2.1 quake occurred just outside of Greeley, one of the few in eastern Colorado this year.

Saturday’s earthquae was the largest in Colorado this year.
