Sunday brings a brief cool-down

Sunday will be the coolest day of the period in Lamar, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 72 degrees in the wake of the front. Winds are expected to be light and northerly during the morning, shifting to the east by afternoon. Skies clear overnight, with a low near 40 degrees and a light easterly wind.

Extended outlook: 90 degrees by Monday

The warm-up returns quickly. Monday is expected to be sunny in Lamar with a high near 90 degrees and a south-southwest wind 5 to 15 mph. Tuesday continues sunny with another high near 90 and a northwest wind 10 to 15 mph shifting to the northeast in the afternoon. Overnight lows both nights are expected to remain mild, in the mid-to-upper 40s.

As of Friday morning, no Red Flag Warnings were in effect from the Pueblo forecast office for Prowers County, which is part of fire weather zone 236. Even without a formal watch, residents are reminded that highs in the upper 80s and 90s, gusty afternoon winds and continued dry fuels can elevate the risk of grass fires across the plains. Open burning restrictions should be checked with local authorities before any outdoor burning.
